Dieffenthal

Between vineyards and mountains, on the Alsace Wine Route, discover the town of Dieffenthal which overlooks the entire vineyard with a splendid view of the Alsace plain, the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle and the Ortenbourg castle.

Famous for its rock path and in particular the Celtic rock, this strange hollowed out rock, full of history and many Celtic legends.
It is said that this bowl-shaped rock (cup stone) would have served as a birthing seat in Celtic times. It is on this emblematic site that every winter, usually on the eve of the first Sunday of Lent, the "Schiewaschlawe" or "throwing of flaming discs" takes place, a Celtic tradition allowing to chase away the winter and to celebrate the coming of spring.

The church of Saint-Michel in Dieffenthal was built in the 18th century on the site of an older sanctuary. The church was extended at the beginning of the 19th century. It is distinguished by the doorframe of its portal, entirely sculpted with volutes.
From the church, take a walk in the medieval garden with its often unknown medicinal plants or go down to the village where you can appreciate several houses dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.

For a family discovery, solve the riddles of the trail game "The mysteries of Dieffenthal". From Dieffenthal, you can also explore the Route des Vins and cycle along the Alsace vineyard cycle route, a cycle path of almost 140 km between vineyards and villages.

Don't hesitate to take part in the walk along the Compostela Way on St James's Day, July 25th, organised by the association of the 10 tourist communes of Haut-Koenigsbourg. This walk of about ten kilometres does not present any particular difficulties, but requires a good physical condition.
