Description
Located at some 25km in the south-west of Strasbourg, Niedernai is a typical village of the plain of Alsace characterized by the mixed-farming.
Proximity of the two borough-centers of Obernai (3km) and Barr (8 km), from the Wine road and the Vosgean solid mass wine trail makes it an excellent starting point for many visits, walks and excursions.
Various archaeological excavations were carried out and in 1995 it was updated a necropolis of the 5th and 6th centuries.
In 1284, Niedernai is described as "city" what grants the right to him to be strengthened and to hold gone.
From this time the vestiges date from the two castles, property of the lords of Landsberg and the enclosing wall with its turns and its double rampart (still to see).
From the 15th century until 1871, Niedernai was a place of israelite worship and the Jewish community accounted for 17% of the population the day before the Revolution.
It still remains of this time some buildings (house of rabbi, restaurant and butchery).
