Description
A winegrowing village on the Wine Trail, at an altitude of 190 m, close to Ribeauvillé and Riquewihr, Bennwihr now has 1200 inhabitants, is attractively flowered during the spring and summer, and magnificently illuminated during the Christmas season.
Its central location makes it an ideal holiday spot and base for exploring the neighbouring villages. The Grands Crus Wine Trail runs through the village, and tours are organised in the summer by the winegrowers of the wine cooperative.
Independent winegrowers and the wine cooperative offer visits to their cellars with tastings of local wines, including the Marckrain Grand Cru.
Connoisseurs also buy seasonal fruit such as cherries, apples and mirabelle plums direct from the producers. Many bed-and-breakfast rooms and furnished flats are available in Bennwihr, and catering is made easy by the local shops and café-restaurants.
Do not miss:
The contemporary church with the magnificent stained-glass window covering the entire south side, providing intense and colourful lighting.
The war memorial, known as 'Fidélité' (Faithfulness), and the fragments of the calvary against the church are the last remains of the old village, which was entirely destroyed in 1945.
A trail is currently being planned to retrace the history of the fighting in the Colmar Pocket and the liberation of the village by the Allied troops.
