The Stolpersteine concept was invented by German artist Gunter Demnig, who did extensive research into people who were persecuted, hunted down and deported during the Nazi period.
Stolpersteine is the plural of the German word Stolperstein, which literally means "a stumbling stone" and thus refers to an obstacle.
Stolpersteine are small concrete paving stones with an engraved brass plate, set into the ground. Each cube recalls the memory of a person persecuted, deported or murdered in a concentration camp, a killing center or in other tragic circumstances... On each brass plaque is inscribed "ici habitait" (Hier wohnte), the name, date of birth and individual fate of the deportee, the place of deportation and the date of death.
Embedded in the sidewalk in front of the victims' last home, several thousand Stolpersteine have been placed since 1993, first in Germany, then in many European countries.
12 memorial stones have been installed in Obernai.
